The panel involved teachers gave a 15 minute presentation on the panel theme, followed by time for questions and discussion. Participants heard ideas about using emotions such as humour, discomfort, disgust and amazement to make learning memorable, personalising the learning of students, and harnessing the power of context to engage and inspire.

SC How far until it stops? – PPDAC secondary data

Dr Sarah Howell & Michelle Freeman (Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu) presented resources for exploring an authentic and relevant context for teaching statistics. For students this context is best understood in both theory and practice!

This hands-on workshop gave teachers a chance to experience for themselves the stages of the PPDAC enquiry cycle within an authentic, engaging, relevant and important context of vehicle and road safety. Teachers posed a question, analysed data, related it to the context and formed a conclusion. This workshop was intended for teachers wanting to build their understanding about carrying out statistical investigations using the PPDAC cycle and gives a context and resources to take back to school. This material is primarily aimed at teachers of Years 9-11 (although it may be useful for Years 7-8 teachers as well).

Driven to Distraction Teaching Resource – Sarah Howell

Dr Sarah Howell has trialled and developed resources set in a meaningful context of road safety for Level 1 students. These tasks would be particularly useful and relevant if a driver training program is part of your school’s curriculum.

Sarah’s work on exploring the issue of road safety through data, has been published on the NZ Transport Agency’s . This includes a link to the resources, which include a unit overview, ICT links on the context, powerpoints for teachers, a QAAM task and dataset.
