Louise Addison (Howick College) presented at the 2015 statistics teachers’ day. This day was jointly hosted by the Department of Statistics and the Auckland Mathematics Association.

The big surprise for Louise this year was discovering she was teaching Year 13 statistics for the first time��in about 10 years?! Louise shared resources she designed and used to develop��students’ statistical insight that were focused around the idea of ‘surprises’ and stories to be found in data. Louise has developed a useful overview of formal report writing for this standard, as well as easy to follow iNZight instructions for bootstrapping a confidence interval for a population parameter.

The bivariate resources use the context of relationships between different bones of carnivorous mammals. An excellent showcase for the use of statistics relevant to��careers in archaeology or biology fields.

Analysing NCEA statistics for inquiry into teaching and learning

Louise Addison presented a workshop at the 2014 Statistics Teachers Day. This day was jointly organised by the��and the University of Auckland .

This presentation was about aspects of Louise’s masters research, undertaken in 2014. An exert from her abstract:

The study found that use of a statistical inquiry process alongside thinking statistically, and the statistical concepts of variation, representation and inference were essential to meaningful interpretation and use of NCEA data. The integration of data use and inquiry required for the effective use of NCEA data was not captured in current frameworks of either data use or inquiry. A proposed integrated framework of data use for inquiry is suggested and discussed as a way schools could examine their inquiry practices alongside a framework of the statistical understanding required for effective inquiry using NCEA data.

Marion Steel from Epsom Girls’ Grammar presented a workshop at an AMA Saturday morning on the progression of sampling experiences for students from years 9-12.

Louise Addison from McAuley High School, presented a reworked plan for building year 10 students’ concepts about Probability for NCEA Level 1 the following year.

Louise discussed a range of ways of thinking about how teachers might build the ‘front end’ of the NZ Curriculum (the Vision, Principles, Values, Key Competencies, Effective Pedagogues and Learning Area Statements) into existing units of work, by refocusing on how you teach rather than what you teach.��
