What? The offers the ability to easily create your own data visualizations. Check out the tabs at the top first, which make some great data science concept links.

Why? Because data is better than anecdote and 鈥渆very piece of statistical information needs a representation鈥攖hat is, a form. Some forms tend to cloud minds, while others foster insight鈥 (Gigerenzer & Edwards, 2003, p. 258).

Who?听 鈥 are an infographic and data visualization agency in Copenhagen. They add value to data and information by telling visual stories that inform and inspire. In other words you send them your data they analysis it, and tell you stuff you may not know already. This is where the saying “Statisticians get to play in other peoples back yards” comes from.

Writing, crafting, critiquing, developing, moderating or what comes down to wrangling Statistics assessments is often a daunting task, with many teachers opting to re-use the same assessments, contexts and data sets repeatedly – The Australian sports data set and zygomatic widths of Maui dolphin rostrums ring any bells?

Lucy Edmonds听 & Heral Patel from Green Bay High School, covered their process of writing both internals and E-O-Y school assessments, from choosing interesting and engaging contexts, to developing an assessment at different levels of understanding. Lucy and Heral are reasonably confident they’ve already made every mistake possible when writing, moderating and administering assessments – and shared a system of writing assessments which make them interesting to both us and the students (acknowledgements to Sue Spencer, Epsom Girls’ Grammar School).听

We all know that New Zealand has an envied, innovative and future focused Statistics curriculum. As we embrace the curriculum at its highest level, ideas allow us to make population inferences from samples that are more formal. There are many great activities and resources that build on the ideas of sampling variation from Level 6 and 7. Mark Hooper’s (Otago Boys’ High School) peer reviewed journal article is a must read for teachers embarking on teaching bootstrapping techniques.听

The practical workshop听used both unplugged and web-based tools. Michelle’s presentation showcased some visual-based and tactile activities from the bootstrapping re-sampling process to confidence intervals.

Resources:听 is my [Michelle’s] powerpoint, and 听is a folder of resources from an earlier workshop. This earlier workshop also covered re-randomisation so there are doozers, pugs and some extra things in there too!

Data science is all about integrating statistical and computational thinking with data. Anna Fergusson’s (University of Auckland) hands-on workshop explored one of the learning tasks Anna designed to introduce students to measures of popularity on the web and APIs.

Participants used familiar statistics tools and approaches, such as data cards, collaborative group tasks and sampling activities, and also try out some new computational tools for learning from data. Statistical concepts covered include features of data distributions and informal inference.听听

Stephanie Budgett and Amy Renelle (University of Auckland) presented a a double workshop on contexts and their uses. In the first workshop, they considered how teachers and content creators can choose engaging contexts. There will be lots of activities and group work to get us talking about what makes a good context fun for students and a bad context a snoozefest!

In the second workshop, Stephanie and Amy continued to explore engaging contexts that can be used in the classroom utilising the Scampy Tool. They looked at waiting time data from the Tangerine Tweet Machine using Data Mode and Simulation Mode of the Scampy Tool.听
