Is probability really just about flipping coins, rolling dice and playing fun games?

Michelle and Grant looked at junior probability in high school and how important it is to build probability foundations for future success. Teachers trialed activities that start conversations about randomness, chance, unpredictability and risk.

Many of the ideas here could be adapted for year 7 & 8 students, especially the probability activities from slide 24 and vocabulary from slide 9.

We all know that New Zealand has an envied, innovative and future focused Statistics curriculum. As we embrace the curriculum at its highest level, ideas allow us to make population inferences from samples that are more formal. There are many great activities and resources that build on the ideas of sampling variation from Level 6 and 7. Mark Hooper’s (Otago Boys’ High School) peer reviewed journal article is a must read for teachers embarking on teaching bootstrapping techniques.聽

The practical workshop聽used both unplugged and web-based tools. Michelle’s presentation showcased some visual-based and tactile activities from the bootstrapping re-sampling process to confidence intervals.

As teachers we often make up examples on the fly. Sometimes this is successful but too often we get unintended consequences. We may also be missing out on opportunities for learning. Researchers claim 鈥渢asks that carefully display constrained variation are generally likely to result in progress in ways that unstructured sets of tasks do not, as long as learners are working within mathematically supportive learning environments.鈥

In this workshop Dr Nic introduced the ideas of variation theory with a compelling exercise. Then participants used the theory to create and explore sequences of examples in teaching mathematics and statistics, that provide opportunities for deeper learning while undertaking purposeful practice.

Tracey’s workshop shared ideas for investigations involving experiments, particularly online examples. Student experiment exemplars were shared and participants tried out the easy to use random redirect tool. If you don’t have experiments as part of your L3 course, then you need to add it now!聽
