Visitor arrivals are overseas residents arriving in New Zealand for a stay of less than 12 months.
For arrival series, the country of residence is the country where a person last lived for 12 months or more (country of last permanent residence).
The United Kingdom also includes the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
Cruise passengers have only been collected separately since September 1997.
Cruise passengers are only recorded as arrivals or departures if they begin or end their cruise in New Zealand. Otherwise, they are regarded as being in transit, even if they leave the ship for periods while it is in New Zealand.

Eight monthly and quarterly time series datasets have been collected from Statistics New Zealand and have been customised in 鈥淚nfoshare鈥 to CSV files appropriate/adequate for iNZight. Seven are multiplicative and one is additive.

For each dataset the total data for the variables being analysed have been added. Model paragraphs as to how a professional statistician would describe the trend, seasonal, and remainder of the variables being compared have been added. There is also a paragraph that highlights comparisons and differences between the variables being analysed and the total data.

At the beginning of each time series resource the 鈥淭otal鈥 data for the variables that are being analysed have been included with no commentary. It has been used to see whether the variables that have been analysed have had an effect on the total. In addition, this enables users to provide their own commentaries about the 鈥淭otal鈥 data to test their knowledge.

At the end of each time series resource a set of notes on how to obtain the particular dataset from the Statistics New Zealand website as well as how to import and analyse the data in iNZight has been added. Also, for some of the time series datasets, a 鈥渦seful links鈥 section in the metadata is included whereby references have been used that have been used in model answers.

Census Education and Training /resource/explore-the-official-census-statistics-nz/ Thu, 16 Jul 2015 23:50:40 +0000 http://new.censusatschool.org.nz/?post_type=resource&p=6419 The census is the official count of people and dwellings in New Zealand. Census information helps determine how billions of dollars are spent in the community. It is needed for planning vital public services such as education, health, housing, and transport. Census data also provides information for community service funding. Businesses, councils, community groups, and iwi also use census information to plan for the future.

Statistics NZ are making big changes to the 2018 Census, to modernise how and what we collect. We hope you take the time to have a look at our products and look forward to working with you in the future to promote the importance of the census.

Dear Educator,

The census is the official count of people and dwellings in New Zealand. At Statistics NZ we are committed to working with community groups and service providers like you to make sure everyone can take part in the census and benefit from the information we produce. Students鈥 families will be involved in completing the next Census. Your role in educating students about what,听how and why statistics are collected, and the integral part they play in听decision听making cannot be overlooked.

The census data aims to inform and broaden our audience base and tell New Zealand鈥檚 statistical stories. Products from the latest are due to be released starting in May 2024.

Other products on our website that may be of interest include:

  • 鈥 which tell New Zealand鈥檚 statistical stories visually
  • 鈥 a tool that lets you create tables of the data from large datasets

Census information helps determine how billions of dollars are spent in the community. It is needed for planning vital public services such as education, health, housing, and transport. Census data also provides information for community service funding. Businesses, councils, community groups, and iwi also use census information to plan for the future.

Find statistics from the , and information about how we produce it. We have modernised how and what we collect. For example, in 2018, most people in New Zealand provided their information online. Your knowledge about the census and why it is important to New Zealand, plays an important part in helping us reach a range of audiences, particularly younger people who may not have heard about the census.

We hope you take the time to look at our and how communities use these. We look forward to working with you in the future to promote the importance of the census.

NZ Incomes 2003 SURF /resource/nz-incomes-surf/ Tue, 18 Dec 2012 21:13:52 +0000 http://new.censusatschool.org.nz/?post_type=resource&p=3655 This is 33,000 records from Statistics New Zealand. Data sampled from this database can be treated as if it was sampled from 鈥渢he New Zealand population aged between 25 and 64 years of age who participate in paid work鈥 in 2003.

The variable names on data-viewer are: age_cat, age_midpt, sex, ethnicity, highest_qualification, weekly_hrs, weekly_income

The values of the categorical variables have been changed from numeric codes to meaningful names. The nature of most of the variables is clear from their names. Exceptions: are age_cat, which is age in 5-year age groups coded as 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 鈥; age_mid whose values are the midpoint of the age categories.

Download the data (csv): NZIncomes03_11000 or NZIncomes03_34000

These are Synthetic Unit-Record Files (SURFs) from Statistics New Zealand. NZIncomes03_11000 is a set of 11,000 synthetic unit-records and NZIncomes03_34000 is set of 34,000 synthetic unit-records simulating data from the NZ Income Survey (NZIS) in the June 2003 quarter. While the data is fictitious, it has been constructed so that the mean and relationships between variables are similar to those in the real data collected.

Data sampled in this database (and random samples from it) can be treated as if it was sampled from 鈥渢he New Zealand population aged between 25 and 64 years of age who participate in paid work鈥 in 2003.

The data records with a mixture of categorical and numerical variables.听 We have replaced the variables from NZIS with numerical category codes with short descriptive codes as follows:

  • Age midpoint (age_midpt): Between 25 and 64 years (27.5, 32.5, 37.5, 鈥.., 62.5)听 in 5-year age bands
  • Age Category (age_cat):听 Between 25 and 64 years (25-29, 30-34, 鈥, 60-64) in 5-year age bands
  • Sex: male and female (M,听 F)
  • Ethnicity: six categories (european-pakeha, maori, pacific, non-maori combination, maori combination, other)
  • Highest qualification (highest_qualification): five categories (post school, school, no qualification, bachelor or higher, vocational/trade)
  • Weekly hours (weekly_hrs):听 total usual weekly hours worked from all wages and salary jobs (weekly_hrs)
  • Weekly income (weekly_income):听 total usual weekly income ($) from all sources (weekly_income)

The values of the categorical variables have been changed from numeric codes to meaningful names. The nature of most of the variables is clear from their names.听 Exceptions: are age_cat, which is age in 5-year age groups coded as 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 鈥; age_mid whose values are the midpoint of the age categories.
