from Lynfield College was a Royal Society Fellow in 2013. She has produced many valuable resources that allow students to explore concepts about data through Tinker Plots data visualization and modeling technology.

The focus of the following 2 tasks:

  1. To observe variation of results when an experiment is repeated a small number of times
  2. To use simulation to estimate a probability
  3. To compare the probability situation when sampling with and without replacement (Eyes Have it 1 and 2)
  4. In Happy Feet the same probability situation as Eyes 2 is presented in a different context. [research suggests that students need this reinforcement]

Using TinkerPlots to aid the understanding of uncertainty /resource/probability-ncea-level-1-using-tinkerplots-aid-understanding-uncertainty/ Fri, 17 Jan 2014 02:14:22 +0000 http://new.censusatschool.org.nz/?post_type=resource&p=5250 Ruth Kaniuk from Lynfield College was a Endeavor Royal Society Scholar in 2013. In this workshop Ruth's activities use Tinker Plots to enhances the activity by allowing students to 'see' the probability distribution and appreciate it's implications.

Ruth Kaniuk (Lynfield College) was an Endeavor Royal Society Scholar in 2013. In her workshop, Ruth guided teachers through several activities suitable for NCEA Level 1,  where Tinker Plots enhances the activity by allowing students to ‘see’ the probability distribution and appreciate its implications.

This workshop focuses on key issues when teaching bivariate data and addresses some possible misconceptions. Teaching points are related to AS 3.9, especially to differences between AS 3.9 and the previous standard.  Regression analysis is conducted using iNZight.

Note, the sound quality is variable due to the microphone position.

This workshop gives details on how to use the time series module of iNZight, including necessary data protocols, and an example of a typical time series analysis using the Polar Ice data set (currently available on NZQA website) will be covered. A brief explanation of the Seasonal Lowess Model and the Holt-Winters Model, both of which are used by iNZight, will be given.

There will also be a discussion of why these models are an improvement over past techniques used. Details of resources that have been developed for time series analysis using iNZight will also be available.

Please note, this workshop was prepared in 2012 while the time series standard was still in draft form.   It has since been registered and may differ slightly to the content in this workshop.
