As teachers we often make up examples on the fly. Sometimes this is successful but too often we get unintended consequences. We may also be missing out on opportunities for learning. Researchers claim “tasks that carefully display constrained variation are generally likely to result in progress in ways that unstructured sets of tasks do not, as long as learners are working within mathematically supportive learning environments.”

In this workshop Dr Nic introduced the ideas of variation theory with a compelling exercise. Then participants used the theory to create and explore sequences of examples in teaching mathematics and statistics, that provide opportunities for deeper learning while undertaking purposeful practice.

Dr Nic (Statistics Learning Centre) examines why student discussion helps learning, and techniques for encouraging discussion about mathematics and statistics. Traditional mathematics teaching did not involve a great deal of discussion, and consequently some teachers find this challenging. In this hands-on workshop Dr Nic explored strategies to improve classroom discussion to help students learn about statistics, and look at common pitfalls and how to deal with them.

Nicola Petty, (aka Dr Nic), from the Statistics Learning Centre, explored issues around developing statistical insight.

Scholarship is a rich opportunity to help students to develop more integrated knowledge and to communicate clearly, concisely and with conviction. Producing “Excellent” level work is not a cosmetic top layer, nor simply a matter of going one step further, but rather displaying deeper understanding and the ability to transfer and make connections.

Dr Nicola Petty explored ideas and activities in her workshop that can help lift the level of response in NCEA level 3 statistics to excellence level, and prepare students for the scholarship exam. In order to provide a valuable experience for students at a scholarship day in Hamilton in 2014, Nicola did a lot of thinking, reading and preparation. She shares a condensed version here with activities and discussion.

Nicola Petty, aka Dr Nic, makes the move away from dice and coin tossing. She explains that not only are they boring contexts but when we use equi-probable equipment all the time it can entrench incorrect ideas. She uses problems that matter, and discusses ethical aspects when teaching probability. Dr Nic answers the burning questions for teachers exploring probability with their students:

Is there such a thing as ‘true’ probability?

How are model estimates and experimental estimates related?

Whatever happened to subjective probability?

What does the curriculum mean by good model, poor model and no model?

How do you teach about deterministic and probabilistic models?

What exactly is a model and why is it hard for students to get their head around the concept?
