Malia Puloka (University of Auckland) knows that for students with very low literacy levels, writing NCEA statistical reports is a nightmare. Teaching such students to write statistical reports even at a basic level can be quite frustrating for teachers. The workshop shared ideas Malia used in the classroom which resulted in students writing better reports, increasing the pass rate and the number of Merit/Excellence grades. Malia focussed on analysing and writing discussions for statistical graphs. This strategy would suit a classroom that is predominantly ESOL students.

Eikosograms to teach conditional and joint probability – Malia Puloka /resource/using-the-eikosogram-to-teach-conditional-and-joint-probability/ Tue, 03 Jan 2017 02:13:23 +0000 http://new.censusatschool.org.nz/?post_type=resource&p=8132 Malia Puloka's (Mangere College) workshop looked at visualising data to inform teaching. Malia demonstrated how we can teach the concepts of conditional and joint probability using the Eikosogram.

Malia Puloka’s (Mangere College) workshop looked at visualising data to inform teaching and learning.

Malia’s workshop explored how to teach the concepts of conditional and joint probability using the Eikosogram. Equally important is the interpretation and verbalisation of proportion and probability statements and the posing of questions, which Malia also looks at. The workshop was based on Malia’s master’s research with Year 13 students. The Eikosogram is a new computer visualisation tool for displaying two-way table information. This is important pedagogy for the two Probability Externals AS91267 and AS91585. The Eikosogram is accessed online.
