Is probability really just about flipping coins, rolling dice and playing fun games?

Michelle and Grant looked at junior probability in high school and how important it is to build probability foundations for future success. Teachers trialed activities that start conversations about randomness, chance, unpredictability and risk.

Many of the ideas here could be adapted for year 7 & 8 students, especially the probability activities from slide 24 and vocabulary from slide 9.

Making experiments awesome – Grant Ritchie & Michelle Dalrymple

In 2015 Grant and Michelle aimed to make their Level 2 and Level 3 Statistics courses as AWESOME as possible.�� They tackled this challenge with lots of fun, learning through doing, and encouraging a positive collaborative classroom culture.�� Their workshop shared experiences teaching Level 2 & Level 3 Experiments and endeavored to discuss: good experiments to do in class, incorporating the research component and key teaching moments.�� They also bragged about their inaugural annual “Experiments Camp”.

Fun + Relationships + Curriculum = Awesome, Grant Ritchie & Michelle Dalrymple

Michelle and Grant posed the question: Does building strong relationships in the classroom happen by chance?�� What can we do to foster the development of student-teacher and student-student relationships within our curriculum activities?�� Grant and Michelle shared statistical activities that they have used successfully in their classes, these involve engaging students in play and ensuring they enjoy learning about data, chance and distribution.

Probability – Planning to learn

Grant Ritchie and Michelle Dalrymple asked teachers “is junior probability just about rolling dice and playing games at your school? Is it often left to the end of the year as a filler?�� During this workshop, Grant and Michelle demonstrated hands-on activities that have been chosen to deliberately develop key probability thinking in preparation for senior school.�� They discussed how they are working with their teachers to think about why they use particular probability tasks, what are the learning intentions, where does it fit into the bigger learning programme for that year and beyond?

Probability…the pathway to Year 13 from Year 9��
Abstract: ��This workshop focused on unpacking the key probability learning concepts at each curriculum level. ��The aim was to assist teachers in developing a pathway in probabilistic thinking that is appropriate at each level. ��There were opportunity for teachers to evaluate where their school is currently at, and to identify what sequential building blocks are needed for students. Teacher’s shared probability activities they have found worked well in their classes. Workshop attendees brought a copy of their school’s current probability progressions.

This work is in line with Statistics Education research calling for the reconnection of the statistics and probability strands of curricula.

Sampling variation just keeps turning up everywhere!
Abstract:��Sampling variation seems to be a tricky concept for students to grasp and it just keeps turning up in places they don’t expect it, such as simulations or probability distributions.�� Michelle shared activities and ideas she uses to help students understand sampling variation, including a focus on the sample-to-population inference progressions and sampling variation with data derived from a probability situation.
