Exploring data and uncovering the stories is Emma Wilson’s (University of Auckland) favourite part of statistics. Emma’s workshop unpacked exploratory data analysis, its importance in statistics education and how to run exploratory activities in the classroom.

The transition from Year 13 to Stage One statistics – Emma Wilson

Emma Wilson’s workshop introduced some concepts taught in the stage one statistics courses at the University of Auckland and how these are related to NCEA Level 3 standards. Emma has experience teaching in a year 13 statistics classroom and in a stage one lecture theatre and shared some of her experiences noticing what students find particularly difficult in the transition to university.

Emma offered suggestions on how to best make use of what is already being taught at Year 13 to prepare students for the next step in their statistics education.

Helen Nieuwelaar & Emma Wilson (Avondale College) share key ideas of the level 8 experiments workshop by Anna Fergusson at the 2012 Auckland Statistics Teachers’ day.

This document also incorporates reflections and suggestions from teaching Anna’s material during 2013. Helen and Emma share their teaching approaches and discuss ideas for teaching the experiments topic in 2014.

Experiments at Level 7

Emma Wilson presented ideas for students to be successful learning concepts relevant to conducting experiments for AS 2.10.
Emma shared a powerpoint presentation to help consolidate understandings around the Achievement Objective S7.1 as well as ideas about how to co-ordinate the actual assessment of this standard.
Note: This workshop is similar to the AMA Saturday workshop Emma ran earlier in 2012.
