Marina McFarland and Richard Mariu (Auckland Girls’ Grammar School) presented a data literacy workshop at the 2023 Statistics Teachers’ Day.

Participants analysed articles using the frameworks provided (). Further online data literacy resources developed for the TFC (Tertiary Foundation Program) at the University of Auckland are also included. They could be repurposed for Level 2/3 Statistics or Scholarship programs as a weekly focus on developing students’ data literacy capabilities.

Have students select and design their own online data literacy resource, then send in resources to share.

This lesson introduces Year 1 students to exploring, graphing, and interpreting categorical data through the context of lost property in their school. In a teacher-supported lesson, students are encouraged to organise and learn from physical data, to transition to icon bar graphs and to engage in the entire PPDAC cycle.

presents important data contexts and technology to expose students to the idea of variation all around them and how students can learn from examining and representing variation.

webinar deal with what teachers need to know about how students perceive data in distributions. Distribution is a meta-concept! The variation seen in distributions is key to making statistical inferences from data.

A Model and Modelling approach – Anne Patel /resource/a-models-and-modelling-approach/ Mon, 14 Jan 2019 21:21:41 +0000 http://new.censusatschool.org.nz/?post_type=resource&p=10057 Anne Patel (CensusAtSchool and University of Auckland). This workshop presented part of Anne's PhD research using MEAs (Model Eliciting Activity) to develop students' understanding of the power of models and modelling.

This workshop presented part of Anne’s PhD research using a MEA (Model Eliciting Activity) to develop students’ understanding of the power of models and modelling. A modelling approach can strengthen students reasoning about chance and data ideas simultaneously. Anne designed an MEA and Follow Up Tasks (FUTs) which required students to build a model and reason about underlying randomness in data. Teachers experienced and discussed pedagogy that learning experiences. The tasks were designed for Year 7-8 students but are suitable for Year 9-10.

Papers related to Anne’s Phd include:

Anne Patel, Otahuhu College, Census At School & Jake Wills, Westlake Boys’ High School, present at the joint AMA and University of Auckland Statistics Teachers’ Day.

Anne and Jake discuss students formal writing skills that are already at excellence level, but point out language issues teachers and students should be aware of.

Excellence level statistical communication will be a focus as integration of both sets of knowledge (statistical and contextual) are required for students to reach Excellence in this standard.

It is important to note that the language features discussed will not be applicable to all students, especially those working towards Achieved level, who have a basic grasp of  both formal report writing and statistical concepts at level 3.
